Edited by: Cpt Advile on 20/01/2008 22:28:40 Sooo it's 00:19 here in Estonia and my main char is stuck in Jita... As I had nothing to do I started browsing google for EVE, as I can't live with out it (it seems).
Then I found this:
BS concept
This is a Asgeir Jon Asgeirsson's work of an Minmatar battleship (Maelstrom, If I'm not mistaking [I fly Amarr myself :p]). I found it to be spectacular!, I only wish it would look like that in the game, but that would surely kill there poly limit for a model in the game, so as an 3D artist myself I wanted to construct a 3D model based on that concept that wouldn't be limited by polygons nor texture memory etc...
So here's my "Minmatar BShip Project": I will try to model it, as detailedly as I can and I will post my progress here, for ppl to see/judge it.
enjoy:

Edited by: Cpt Advile on 21/01/2008 15:39:01 Yap... starting from start is better, as imported models can be bugged etc... I only hope the proportions will go right (or I will make em right) when the ship starts to form.

There is no sense of scale yet evident in the wing. No sense of how it would have been constructed or maintained (this is also evident within the original concept, but hints are there in other areas.) -I want to build the ship exactly as it is on the concept... afther that is complete I will move on to adding things like ladders, hatches, ports, etc...
Some things you may wish to consider.
- Transparency (or alpha maps) to the main solar panels showing the supporting structure underneath. -That is actually a pretty good idea, as it would make a large area of the ship look more real and complex... I'll work on it tonight when I'm back from work/school
- The main support strut. Is it a series of modules stacked together, or is it a steel matrix with a armor plate skin? this may go towards how you wish to texture that area to give it scale and show how it was assembled. The upper panels above the main hull show large sections that can be removed to access the inner areas of the panels. are their any access points to the lower struts.
- If something needs repair at the base how does the crew get there? is there an internal lift or perhaps running its length should be hydraulic runs?
- your running lights are huge and "simplistic", If your going for detail glowing domes for lights is not the best approach. -Don't worry about them. At the moment they are just painted red. They will get there textures when the time comes.
Final point. The CCP models love to show glowing windows everywhere on there ship. The problem is window placement and scaling is arbitrary and i think distorts the true sense of scale on a ship (especially comparing a frigate side by side to a battleship) When you get to that point i would suggest stepping back from CCP and thinking on how your ship is inhabited. -Wilco

Todays progress: Uper wing progress and new structures
I know the thing on the upper wing (the thing where the red light comes out) is out of proportion, I will work on that in the future.
I also added frames where the solar panels are built on. (not on the concept)
C U tomorrow :p

Tonights progress: main hull
Today I spent most of my time on re-scaling and because I couldn't successfully rescale the ship, so it would look normal like on the concept, I had to force the upper wing few inches back. That made the whole ship look better.
Some of you, who still have there eye sight more or less ok (from all the playing), may see some strange "welding shadows" on the second armor plate. I can assure you, that is perfectly normal, don't ask about it.
More coming tomorrow

aaand here's my progress:
front is done and working on hull
-don't worry about windows and there scales, I will make them smaller, to stress the size of the whole ship. I also did some of my own creation off the concept when working on the nose of the ship, I hope you like it.
ohh, and I just realized I haven't begged for money yet... sooo feel free to sponsor the project (give me iskis), if you'd like to contribute.

Here comes tonights bonus: 1400mm Howitzer cannon. The ship will be having 8 of them on both sides.
stage 1 stage 2 basic shape ready advanced lightning ...a little dirt ...mix with textures ...add mooar colors and you have a 1400mm gun Feeling lucky? Gun in action
Make sure you enjoy it... as I worked hard, non-stop, over 4h to make it look like this.

Originally by: flashfreaking In the Pic: Feeling Lucky? The gun is reflected on the surface. How did you do that?
oh that's easy... you just take a standard v-ray material and change the "reflect" color to gray.... that's really all you have to do. ------------------------------------------
Originally by: Miss Ore CCP give this man a job right now. We want our guns to look like that!
A job in CCP woult be a dreamy, but I'm terrible at optimizing, so I would just make you computer more laggyer. I'm also a lousy drawer, but people say I can model 3D models faster then normal 3D people around the world do. ------------------------------------------
...btw, I'm sorry to say but I'm afraid there will be no tonights update, as I spent all of my day playing Rainbow 6:Vegas co-op with my bud and I kinda want to sleep. I'm pretty sure about tomorrows update tho... -you guys were getting too much eye-candy anyway

Engine in progress
I have now started my work on the engine. Once again I didn't exactly follow the concept, as I found it to be to plane, so I added a bit more detail to the engine sides.

-Like I said before, that would be a dream-job, but I'm still very young and have to finish my 12th grade and make out with my GF, etc... before I could accept a job in CCP anyway... :( (but if CCP guys like my work and want me, then screw that, I will be in Iceland ASAP!!)

...todays update is less "visual", in other words, I spent todays time on optimizing. The sad part is: I'm afraid it will still go up to 70k polygons when the model finishes. I'll try to keep "optimizing" in mind when creating my next model.

Edited by: Cpt Advile on 08/02/2008 16:57:11 I heard that you have all been good children, so I'm releasing another WorkInProgress screen of the ship.
Now, I have added A LOT of detail to this ship from the past "shot", some of that you will see right away, some takes a bit more time to notice, but I have been constantly adding detail to various parts of the ship for over 6 hours straight now...
Hull 75% ready

Are you willing to listen to some criticism, or you'd rather pass? I ask because there are many people who don't like, so I don't wanna go :words: if you're doing the model just for fun and don't care about the possible mistakes here and there.
(If you want I can just PM/eve-mail)
-I have nothing against constructive criticism, unless it's about being off concept, because I know about that already. : ) EDIT: Also if there is anything that you would like to see on a ship (that fits there, corse I'm not talking about "I can haz cheezburger" cats and bunnyes), then let me know, k?

Originally by: flashfreaking It might be me, but the Small Armor plating looks more like leather on the the teapot, not so much on the cube though, something to do with lightning? Great work overall, any good tutorials suggestions for texture making?
-Yeah, that texture isn't meant for round objects and the bumpmaping seems to get too stretched out. Lightning just doubles the fake feeling. -Don't know about tutorials tho, never done em :p (except V-ray "dirt" one) -------------------------------------------- Captain: Scotty, boost amarr laser power... The last picture seems somewhat over lightened, but don't worry about that, as I haven't put any effort in to lightning yet. Also this is still far from the final product :p
enjoy tho!
